Week 4 - Volcano Eruptions

So, this week is definitely the most exciting for us so far, but we needed to think about the science before we got to the erupting part!!!!

We talked about what causes the volcano to explode in the volcano science experiment... it is the reaction between the bicarbonate of soda and the vinegar.

Bicarbonate of soda is a base and vinegar is an acid. When a base and an acid are mixed, it creates a by-product of carbon dioxide, which causes the mixture to overflow just like a shaken pop bottle.

We carefully poured the bicarbonate of soda into the bottle using a funnel.  We added the vinegar to the volcano slowly, a little at a time and waited for the reaction.  We discussed safety this week and decided that as we were making explosive reactions, we needed to wear our safety goggles.

Lava flowing everywhere!!!!!
