UV Rays and Sun Safety

Woodpeckers have been learning all about sun safety. We know that we can stay from the sun by putting on cream, wearing a hat and staying in the shade. We learnt that the ultra violet (UV) rays from sun are the ones that we need to protect ourselves from.

We carried out an investigation using UV beads that change colour when they are exposed to UV light. We predicted that they would change slowly. We observed that the beads changed into a range of colours really quickly when exposed to the sunlight and therefore lots of UV rays. We noticed that they did change when we were in the shade but not as quickly. We concluded that the more shade there is the less UV rays there are.

All the children really enjoyed this experiment and the learning they got from this was amazing!
