Making Rain Gauges

Measuring Rainfall.

So this week we have been discussing the weather.  We decided that we would like to make rain gauges to measure the amount of rainfall over the period of a week. We began by carefully removing the top of a plastic water bottle.  Then we turned the top upside down and carefully secured it in the bottle base.  This created a funnel which will collect the rainfall more efficiently.  We then made some jelly (we didn't use the full amount of water so that the jelly set more quickly).  Next we carefully poured the jelly into the funnel to give the base a level surface this will ensure that our measurements are accurate.

Finally we discussed where we could put the rain gauges in our outdoor area in order to obtain the best results.  We made sure that the gauges were placed into the ground slightly so that they were stable and wouldn't get blown over.
