Chinese New Year

Happy Chinese New Year Everyone!

In Woodpeckers, we have been learning about Chinese New Year. This year is the year of the rabbit.

In English, we read the story 'The Great Race' and learnt about how the years of the zodic were created from the winners of the race. We used drama and oral storytelling to write about the story. We created our own class book about 'The Great Race' and proudly displayed it in our reading corner.

In the afternoon, during History, we learnt about the history of Chinese New Year and some of the traditions that happen when people celebrate this special time. One of the special traditions is giving others money envelopes. We looked carefully at the symbol that means rabbit and carefully made our own money envelopes with the symbol of a rabbit on the front. We put a special gold coin inside and took it home to give to one of our family.

In Art, we learnt how to draw a dragon. The children watched the artist, step by step, and then copied the steps carefully to draw themselves a dragon on their clipboards. We had so much fun!
