Arm Span versus Height - An investigation.

So this week we investigated the following question:

"Is the arm span of a person the same as their height?"

We predicted that the answer to this question would be 'no'. So we thought carefully about this question and decided that we needed to go outside and measure our arm span carefully by laying on the ground and carefully drawing a line where our longest finger reached to on each hand.  We made sure that we were laid flat on the ground and that our arms were fully stretched out. We then got up and laid in the same place with our heads on one marker to see if our feet reached the other marker.  What do you think our results and conclusion were? We found out that for 10 out of 12 children their arm span was exactly the same length as their height. So we discovered that for most people their arm span is the same as their height.  We then thought about people who had longer arms and if this would be a good thing ... we decided that having longer arms might be useful for swimmers as it would help them move through the water more quickly.

We then revisited our learning about the human body by drawing the organs that we have been learning about on an outline of the human body.
