Welcome to the Haven

 

In order to respond to the needs of our children, we have designed multiple curriculum pathways for children attending Killamarsh Infant and Nursery School. These pathways vary depending on the needs of the child and range from those who can access their learning at either EYFS or National Curriculum levels to those who do not yet have the skills in order to access formal learning.

Regardless of their ability to access formal learning, children will all be provided with opportunities to learn alongside their peers in class, spend time with friends at unstructured times such as break and lunchtime and access school enrichment opportunities (including class trips, performances, extra-curricular activities).

There are three learning pathways; our main, formal offer (Connect) and then two additional pathways (Explore and Discover) to allow small steps of progress for learners with SEND. 

Explore - Discover – Connect

These pathways are not always linear and a child may take different routes, at different stages of their development, according to their needs and abilities.

​

A key aspect of our curriculum offer is equipping children with the necessary skills to support them in the next step of their life. This includes ensuring developmentally appropriate health, community, relationships, independent living and employment skills. ​​

Our aim is for children to leave Killamarsh Infant and Nursery School at the end of KS1 with:

• Confidence and self-efficacy
• Resilience and ambition 
• Functional levels of literacy and numeracy

Curriculum Pathway – Explore

Explore is our informal pathway. As part of our Explore Pathway, we provide children with solid foundations to equip them with the skills they require in order to access the more formal, subject-specific learning found within our Discover and then Connect Pathway. We use the Engagement Model Principles to support children in developing new skills and acquiring knowledge within our Explore Pathway Curriculum.

Exploration - Realisation - Anticipation - Persistence - Initiation

Our Explore Pathway learners require a higher level of adult support, both for their learning needs and their social and personal care needs, and are likely to need sensory stimulation with their curriculum broken down into very small steps. Some of our learners on this pathway are pre-verbal and communicate by gesture, eye-pointing, and at times very simple language or vocalisations. Children on our Explore Pathway will usually be supported by an Educational Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

We understand that our Explore children are likely not follow a straight, linear pathway because of their individual needs and strengths. We recognise that there needs to be fluidity between our pathways for these children, allowing for a more personalised approach, and we achieve this by knowing our children, their strengths and their needs exceptionally well.

Curriculum Pathway - Discover​

Discover is our semi-formal pathway. As part of our Discover Pathway, we provide children with the skills and knowledge to strengthen and build on the foundations from the Explore Pathway. This enables them to begin to access some subject specific learning to support progression onto the Connect Pathway. The Discovery Pathway recognises that children may not have all the skills, as of yet, to fully access learning at formal level so combines aspects of subject specific learning alongside other skills (i.e. attention, problem solving, motor skills etc.) at a non-formal level.

Our Discover Pathway learners still require a relatively high level of adult support, both for their learning needs and their social and personal care needs, and are likely to still need sensory stimulation with their curriculum broken down into small steps. Some of our learners on this pathway may be pre-verbal and communicate by gesture, eye-pointing, and at times very simple language or vocalisations. Other children on this pathway may have strong speaking and listening skills but have needs in other areas. Children on our Discover Pathway are usually supported by an Educational Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

We recognise that there needs to be fluidity between our pathways for these children, allowing for a more personalised approach at times, and we achieve this by knowing our children, their strengths and their needs exceptionally well. 

 

Curriculum Pathway – Connect

The Connect Pathway is our formal pathway and is our main curriculum offer.  Children accessing learning on this pathway have the relevant skills and knowledge to be able to access formal, subject specific learning for the entire school day. Children with additional needs on this pathway are cognitively able to access National Curriculum subjects but these may need to be modified in the light of their developmental level and special educational needs.
