As part of the ‘Our School’ topic we have learnt all about healthy eating. We know that we should eat 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day but we have also learnt about the different food groups including carbohydrates, protein and dairy. We have learnt all about a healthy food plate and how much of each food group we should have.
In order to design a healthy wrap we needed to try different combinations of foods from each food group. We tried foods from the fruit and vegetable, protein and dairy groups. The wrap will be the carbohydrate part of our meal. It was wonderful to see the children exploring and trying different foods that they haven’t had before such as green peppers.
Finally we used all we had learnt about healthy foods and designed our own combinations of food to make a healthy wrap. We tried to make sure we had food from each of the food groups to ensure our wraps were healthy.
We have lots of fun this half term during our Muddy Monday sessions. Our particular favourite was bird spotting. Before we went outside we watched a video all about common garden birds and listened carefully to their bird songs so that we could identify each bird when we got outside. We made sure that we were really quiet and listened carefully once we were out so that we could hear the songs. We used a bird identification sheet to help us record each bird so that we could remember what we had discovered when we were talking about them later.
In science we have been learning all about plants. We have looked at which part of a plant grows first once a seed has been planted in the ground. We used our drama skills to act out the different stages of plant growth.
We have spent some time this week talking all about recycling. We have learnt about sorting our rubbish and making sure it goes to the right place so that it can be recycled. We talked about the impact of waste on our environment and how we can help by recycling as much as we can. We even talked about how we can repurpose items such as cereal boxes and egg boxes into toys. We decided to use some of the recycling we have collected to make a vehicle for a teddy bear.
In Key Stage One we are lucky enough to be invited to Killamarsh library every half term. We walked down to the library through our village and make sure we follow the Green Cross Code to cross the roads safely.
When we arrive we get some time to have a look around the lovely books and then we listen to a story. After that we are able to loan a book and check it out using the desk and our library cards.
This term we have been celebrating Black History month with some African dancing. We loved welcoming a special visitor “Bemma” back into our school and we danced our socks off to the 'Waka, Waka' song. We pretended to be African animals and danced making animal movements. Later we danced like African warriors and chanted just like they do while we were dancing.
