Ewww Germs ...

Our first week of science club we planned and carried out an investigation all about germs.  First of all we moved around the classroom and touched as many surfaces as we possibly could.  We then used a special solution that would glow using an Ultra Violet torch if there were germs present.  After looking at our hands covered in germs we then washed them thoroughly using soap and water and compared the final results.

Galaxies Galore

Using the planet backgrounds we created last week we designed our own individual planet.  This involved lots of discussion about various scientific concepts such as gravity and human life or otherwise.

Batty about Bats

As a Halloween activity we got busy making flying bats.
We decorated a template and then cut it out.  We then carefully attached the end of a plastic pipette to the back on the bat.  We inserted a straw into the bat and then blew hard.  We discussed about the pressure from the air blown for our mouths pushed onto the bats and forced them off the end of the straw and flying around.

The Digestive System

The Digestive System

So this week was all about the digestive system.  We discussed the human body and the major organs e.g. heart, brain, lungs, stomach, intestines, oesophagus, lungs. We then talked in more detail about the organs of the digestive system and what happens to a piece of food as it travels through our body.

We then recreated our digestive system, practising using the correct vocabulary such as saliva, enzymes and oesophagus.

We mashed some Weetabix in a cup and added saliva (water) to break down the food.   We then talked about the food moving down the oesophagus into the stomach.  We mixed in the enzymes (cola) in our stomach to 'digest' it further. We then spooned the mixture into the intestines (tights) and squeezed it through to the end of the intestines and then let nature take it’s course!!!!
