Arm span versus Height - An Investigation

Is the arm span of a person the same as their height?

We predicted that the answer to this question would be 'no'. So we thought carefully about this question and decided that we needed to measure our arm span carefully by laying on the floor and carefully drawing a line where our longest finger reached to on each hand.  We made sure that we were laid flat on the ground and that our arms were fully stretched. We then got up and laid in the same place with our heads on one marker to see if our feet reached the other marker.  What do you think our results and conclusion were? We found out that for 9 out of 12 children their arm span was exactly the same length as their height. So we discovered that for most people their arm span is the same as their height.  We then thought about people who had longer arms and if this would be a good thing if you were trying to reach something from a high shelf!!!

Crystal Making

First we added Epsom salts to the glass jar.  We then added a couple of drops of food colouring.  We then added 1/2 cup of very hot tap water to the jar and stirred for one minute.  We discussed that there maybe some salts left in the jar that had not dissolved because the solution was saturated. We then the put the jars in the fridge to cool to allow the crystals to form.

Lava Lamps

This week we investigated the consistency of different liquids and looked at if they mixed together. We added oil to water and tried to mix together but we observed that the two liquids stayed separated.

Changing States of Matter

This week we looked at different states of matter, solid, liquid and gas. We then looked at changing the state of matter by melting.  We discussed making sure that it was a fair test and also made predictions of which solid would melt the quickest. We talked about how the heat was coming from our own body temperature - when then investigated if we increased our body temperature by jumping around would the chocolate melt quicker.  When we finished we managed to get rid of the melted chocolate by eating it!!!
