Butterflies

Symmetrical Butterflies

We learnt about symmetry at the Workshop table by painting and folding paper to make symmetrical butterflies.

At home you could try this activity, supporting your child to see the fold in the paper as the line of symmetry.

Playdough Butterflies

We continued to learn about symmetry at the playdough table. The children used mirrors to help them make symmetrical butterflies, using the mirror on the line of symmetry to help them to reflect their pattern on the other side of the butterfly.

The children also learnt about the features of a butterfly; naming the wings, antenna, body, six legs, and tongue.

At home you could invite your child to name the features of a butterfly and say what they are for.

Symmetry

'Symmetrical' was an exciting new word for us to say and learn about, and we used it at the Messy Play Tray and the Maths Area as we made symmetrical patterns and talked about symmetry.

Searching for Butterflies

We used periscopes outside to look for butterflies outside...and also drew butterflies using chunky chalks and made butterflies from natural materials!

Butterfly Life Cycle

As we developed our fine motor skills by making curly caterpillars, we learnt about the lifecycle of a butterfly.

We demonstrated our knowledge of the lifecycle through words, singing, drawing, and craft.

At home you could invite your child to tell you all about the life cycle of a butterfly, encouraging them to draw this or sing our song for you.

Welly Fun Butterflies

On our Welly Fun session, we make butterflies!

At home you could encourage your child to describe how they made their butterfly!
